Pineapple
Pineapple (Scientific name: Ananas comosus) is one of the tropical fruits. They are called Wang Pear or ong-lai in Fujian and Taiwan, Huang pear in Singapore, and pineapple in mainland China and Hong Kong. There are more than 70 varieties, one of the four famous fruits in Lingnan.
Pineapples originated in the Amazon River basin of Brazil and Paraguay in South America and were introduced to China from Brazil in the 16th century. It has now spread throughout the tropics. The edible part consists mainly of a fleshy and enlarged inflorescence axis, peripherally arranged helical flowers, flowers usually not fruity, persistent perianth lobes enclosed in an empty cavity, cavity containing atrophied stamens and styles.
